Why I Made This Guide:

People will say "just talk to your customers".

But no one really tells you how to do this. A friendly chat is great for building relationships but it's not a process for collecting insights, that help you move the needle.

Customer research, specifically interviewing customers, has been a foundational piece of my career. Having a deep understanding of customers & buyers, to make informed decisions about the business.

So I made this course/guide/DIY to help you run a research interview that doesn't suck.

How it Works

I've designed this guide to help you navigate each step of a customer research interview. Watch a lesson, do the work.

Rinse, repeat

What You'll Learn

  • How to determine the type of interview you need
  • How to set research objectives (that meet business needs)
  • How to find people to speak with
  • How to conduct an interview
  • How to aggregate and organize data

What You'll Also Get

  • 10 videos lessons with captions & full transcripts
  • A list of 184+ questions you can use in your interviews
  • Scripts & messaging for asking people to speak with you
  • Other templates I use in my work.
  • LIFETIME ACCESS

One Last Thing

My goal is to make this guide something that's updated a few times a year. As I learn new things, I'll put them in this guide. I really believe that structured customer interviews are a game-changer for most businesses and everyone should benefit from using them.

About Me:

Hi.

I’m Ryan… So far I’ve interviewed over 2000 people in my career.

I also run Content Lift which helps marketing & sales teams with customer research.

I've been in B2B for 21 years. I've held roles in Sales, Business Development, Operations and mostly marketing. I’ve been a director, responsible for the odd million-dollar budget…but also supervised bootstrapped budgets at startups. I’ve worked with dozens of entrepreneurs, founders and businesses of all shapes & sizes. I took a small detour in my career, working for CBC as a TV & Radio reporter.
